The Care and Feeding of Truck Tire Gauges

Harvey Brodsky, Managing Director
Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau

I talk about truck tire gauges a lot because they need to be discussed, since a properly calibrated truck tire gauge plays an important part of any tire maintenance program.

The question is often asked, "How can I be certain my tire gauge is accurate?" My answer is that you can't unless you check your gauge with a Master Gauge to be certain it is properly calibrated. Not all truck tire gauges can be calibrated and if your gauge can't be calibrated and is not accurate within a pound or two, THROW IT AWAY and buy a new one.

If you have a gauge that CAN be calibrated, you are one of the lucky (smart!) ones and you can then simply calibrate your gauge if it needs calibrating after you check it against a Master Gauge.

"What is a Master Gauge And Where Can I Buy One?"
A Master Gauge is one that is certified to be accurate by the manufacturer when it leaves the factory. Prices for Master Gauges vary from just under $100 to more than $200, depending on the gauge you select for your fleet - even if your fleet is just one truck.

You should consider the purchase of a Master Gauge as an investment and not a cost!

Tires that carry the proper amount of air pressure - which can only be determined with an accurate gauge - will last longer and are far less likely to fail while in service. They will also be more retreadable when the original tread is worn to the legal limit. Your Master Gauge will pay for itself over time!
